Mathematics
At our school, we embrace a mastery approach to mathematics, ensuring that every child can succeed, no matter their starting point. Our aim is to make maths both challenging and enjoyable, inspiring confidence and curiosity in all learners.
We foster independent, inquisitive thinkers who build strong mathematical foundations. Through a wide range of meaningful learning experiences, pupils are encouraged to make connections between mathematical concepts and real-life situations, deepening their understanding and securing long-term knowledge.
Critical thinking is nurtured through skilful questioning and collaborative learning. Pupils are supported in developing their reasoning skills and are encouraged to articulate their thought processes with clarity and confidence.
In the early years (Reception to Year 2), we follow the NCETM Mastering Number programme to establish secure number sense. From Year 3 to Year 6, we use the White Rose Maths scheme to provide structure and progression. These are complemented by rich resources such as NRICH and NCETM Maths Hub, which further enhance teaching and learning.
By the end of Year 6, our pupils are fluent in all four operations and confident in solving complex problems involving multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages — equipping them with the skills they need for the next stage of their education.
Intent
Our aim is to develop confident, capable, and articulate mathematicians who are fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, able to reason logically, and solve problems effectively. At the heart of our approach is the belief that every child can achieve success in maths.
We have designed a curriculum that is both inclusive and aspirational, enabling all learners to maximise their potential. It encourages critical thinking, mathematical discussion, and the ability to apply concepts in real-world contexts. Children are taught to make meaningful connections across different areas of mathematics and to draw on their understanding across the wider curriculum.
Our maths provision supports the school’s broader curriculum goals, helping children prepare for the future by building essential skills such as collaboration, communication, inquiry, independence, and resilience. At the same time, it nurtures a genuine sense of curiosity and enjoyment in the subject.
By the end of Year 6, pupils leave us as independent learners, confident in applying their mathematical knowledge across a range of contexts and fully prepared for the next stage of their education.
